Kiteboarding on the Sea of Cortez

The East Cape is a mecca for kiteboarding and attracts enthusiasts from all over the world during the winter months. A winning combination of warm winds, endless sunshine and ideal blue waters have firmly planted the area as the go-to winter destination for winter kiting. In support of this exhilarating sport, our Costa Palmas Aventura Team offers a full service program for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

The first step is perfecting kiteboarding beach skills. Taking the time to learn how to fly the kite safely and confidently on the beach dramatically improves the learning curve once beginners hit the water. Next up is a short ride up the beach to nearby Los Barriles, Baja’s most popular kiteboarding town. As the lessons progress into the water, novices will learn how to use and control the power of the kite and cap it all off by taking their first rides on the board. Despite what you may think, you don’t have to be particularly fit or strong to be a good kiteboarder, which is just one of the reasons this sport has become so popular.

While the learning curve for kiteboarding may seem steep, beginners are typically up and riding in the first couple of days and can become self-sufficient intermediates within a matter of weeks. After you’ve reached that stage, expect to be hooked for life.

Along with the outstanding beginner conditions at Los Barriles, there are a myriad of intermediate and advanced kiteboarding spots all within close proximity to Costa Palmas. You can launch right from our beach and find ideal kitesurfing conditions both upwind and downwind of the resort.
