7 Must-Try Activities in and around East Cape

Planning a trip to the eastern side of Los Cabos? East Cape, a tranquil region on the southern tip of Baja isn’t just rich with culture and beauty, it’s home to many outdoor activities. If you’re looking for things to do in East Cape, look no further. Here’s a list of things you should add to your trip itinerary:

  1. 1. Lounge on a beach

One of the most common things to do in East Cape is simply sit on a beach. With some of the most stunning beaches sitting on the Sea of Cortez, you have a handful of picture-perfect spots. Perfect for lounging, swimming, or watching fishermen reel in their catch.

The swimmable, two-mile beach inside Costa Palmas is paradise for guests and residents. Its beauty, complete with sapphire waters and sugary sand, is unmatched.

Keep in mind, most beaches have rough waters or rocky breaks that make swimming dangerous. If you’re looking to swim, ask the concierge for a swimmable beach so your expectations aren’t dashed upon arrival.

  2. 2. Go ATVing

In East Cape, it’s common to see ATVs on the road. Due to the rugged terrain, locals and visitors use ATVs to get around and have fun.

Before East Cape and Cabo were well-known tourist destinations, it was a draw for ATVers who liked to tear up the dusty roads.

Today, avid ATVers travel the Baja Cape Loop Trail, a loop that circles the entire east side of the area. It’s not ideal for beginners, but if you have some experience with off-road vehicles, you will enjoy the adventure.

  3. 3. Snorkel or scuba dive

East Cape is home to Cabo Pulmo, a protected National Marine Park recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park sits on the eastern side of the peninsula and juts into the ocean, making it an ideal home for marine life. Grab a snorkel or scuba gear and check out the fish, coral, and sea creatures that glide beneath the surface.

While snorkeling doesn’t require much experience, scuba diving does. As does free diving, which is also popular at Cabo Pulmo. Classes and training sessions are available for those interested in learning, just check with the concierge at your resort for suggestions.

  4. 4. Explore a natural wonder

In East Cape, you’re surrounded by natural beauty, like hot springs and waterfalls.

    Hot springs

Located west of Cabo Pulmo, you’ll find Santa Rita Hot Springs. Dubbed by some as “nature’s hot tub,” you’ll travel along local roads and tour some of the area’s smaller towns, but the springs are accessible by car.

An admission fee is required to access the hot springs. But once you’re there, you can soak in the toasty waters and feel your stress melt away.

It’s best to visit the springs on a weekday and plan to arrive early. Bring snacks and plenty of water as you won’t find concessions available on-site, but restrooms are available.

If you want to make a day of it, you can explore the neighboring El Chorro Hot Springs. It’s a bit more rustic than Santa Rita, but still a beautiful experience.

    Waterfalls

Not far from the hot springs is Cascada Sol de Mayo, a 25-foot waterfall hidden just off a dirt road. It’s a rugged one-mile walk to get to the cascading water, but once the site is revealed, it’s a jaw-dropping moment.

Thrill-seekers climb to the top and plunge into the deep waters below, but even swimming near the waterfall is an adventure.

  5. 5. Try kitesurfing in Los Barriles

The El Norte winds create a haven for kitesurfing in the small East Cape town of Los Barriles. If you’re new to the sport, you’ll strap your feet into a board and propel through the water via wind trapped in a kite above.

While you can try this sport any time of year, the winds kick up to ideal speeds between October to March.

Classes and boot camps are offered by locals, but you can reach out to your Costa Palmas Aventura team for instruction too.

Kitesurfers flock to Los Barriles every January for an annual competition; Lord and Lady of the Wind. Since 2010, the competition has attracted the best of the best. Transforming into a festival with concerts, parties, and fiestas. With events taking place both on the beach and in town.

  6. 6. Play a round of golf

Baja has some of the most well-known courses scattered along its skinny peninsula. On East Cape, a course designed by golf legend Robert Trent Jones Jr. is an iconic spot to play.

With views of the desert and the sea, perfectly manicured dunescapes, and firm, fast terrain, golfers thoroughly enjoy the Costa Palmas Golf Club. It should certainly make your list of things to do in East Cape.

Play all 18-holes, try the walkable six-hole loop, or sharpen your skills at the 28,000 square-foot putting course.

When you’re done, stop by Lucha Libre, an open-air eatery known for its street tacos, wood-fired pizza, and chimichurri.

Open daily, exclusively to guests of Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, and residents of the elite property. It’s a great way to spend a day.

  7. 7. Tour local real estate opportunities

Many visitors fall in love with East Cape. Known as a calmer sister to Cabo, the region is beautiful, secluded, and offers upscale amenities without the crowds. As a result, you might be inclined to purchase a residence so you can vacation in the area more often.

If you’d like to consider a vacation home, talk with a real estate agent to get started. Discuss what you’re looking for, areas you’d like to explore, and the features you want in a home.

Costa Palmas offers real estate opportunities. Whether you want to live near the marina, where you can house your yacht, the golf course, or overlook the Sea of Cortez, you can find custom villas and elegant residences inside Costa Palmas. Each home is crafted to complement the natural landscape while offering the features you need for contemporary living.
