The Grand Alchemists

With an entry inspired by the “Batalla de Puebla” (Battle of Puebla), one of the Costa Palmas mixologists recently participated in the Grand Marnier 2018 Bartending Competition. Victor was selected to represent the Los Cabos/Baja area as a finalist in the competition with a cocktail aptly named, “Grand Recuerdo” (the Grand Memory) based upon the historic battle between Mexico and France.

The cocktail symbolizes Mexican gastronomy in a cocktail; it’s a “mole poblano” morphed into a libation.

Various types of Mexican chiles – seco, ancho, jalapeño, de árbol – mixed with dehydrated corn tortillas, Mexican chocolate powder were blended with Mexican artisanal beer, orange liquor, and Grand Marnier cognac brandy. Victor topped the handcrafted cocktail using a molecular gastronomy topping of almond and hazelnut liquor.

The 2018 competition included five regions of Mexico, including Los Cabos, Guadalajara, Puerta Vallarta, Playa del Carmen and Mexico City.

Victor went on to compete as a finalist and took 3rd place.

Salud, Victor!
