Leatherback Turtle Release

It’s been 10 long years since any leatherback turtles have been released in Los Cabos. Due to that lengthy hiatus, it was feared that this species was at the point of no return, but we’re thrilled to share some recent news.

Last weekend, 17 baby leatherback turtles were released into the Sea of Cortez from the shores of La Ribera, located right next door to Costa Palmas. Another four nests are currently in the same area, waiting to hatch.

During August through October, hundreds of protected Olive Ridley Turtle hatchlings make their way out of their cozy nests and make their way toward the sea.
Leatherback Turtle Realease Costa Palmas

Through the combined efforts of the Costa Palmas team and local government, a 30km stretch of East Cape coastline is constantly patrolled, providing safe haven for the next generation of turtles to incubate, hatch and make their way to the beckoning Sea of Cortez.

Costa Palmas guests are invited to observe each organized release throughout the season, which never fails to amaze the onlookers. We remain dedicated to the preservation of ocean and marine life and it’s a privilege to share it with our community.
