Learning To Kiteboard

During the winter months, the East Cape of Baja is a kiteboarding mecca. The area attracts enthusiasts from all over the world to enjoy the warm winds, endless sunshine and beautiful blue water.

We’ve had a busy winter so far with a wide range of guests (young and old) taking up this exciting sport and learning to ride with us.

Lessons always start with an in-depth beach lesson. It’s critical to your success that you master your kite skills on land before you get in the water. Once you’ve mastered your beach skills, we take a short ride up the beach to nearby Los Barriles, Baja’s most famous kiteboarding town.

As the lessons progress into the water, you begin by dragging yourself around without a board (instructor in tow) to get a feel for the power of the kite. It’s an exciting process but it doesn’t last long. After a couple of body drag runs down the beach, it’s time to get the board under your feet. Getting up and riding is a combination of muscle memory and kite flying prowess. Despite what you may think, you don’t have to be particularly fit or strong to be a good kiteboarder, just one of the reasons this sport has become so popular.

The great thing about kiteboarding is that the learning curve is really steep. Beginners typically are up and riding in the first couple of days and can become a self-sufficient intermediate in a matter of weeks. When you do reach that stage, you will probably be hooked for life.

Here are a few pictures of our guests learning to kiteboard over the past couple of months.
