A Day of Celebration at Costa Palmas

It was a day of pride as Costa Palmas celebrated the school age participants of the, “Aprende, Cultiva, Come y Vamos” education program. Approximately 150 local school children were acknowledged by the Costa Palmas team and prominent local La Ribera delegates and directors along with their family members for their participation in the 20-week, “Learn, Grow, Eat and Go” program, with curriculum provided by Texas A&M.

The completely Spanish program is a first of its kind in all of Baja and rapidly grew from 50 students in 2017 to 150 4th, 5th and 6th graders in 2018. During the 20 weeks, students completed both classroom and field experiences that taught them the basics of cultivation and farming, along with nutrition, math, science and more.

The formal graduation included a look back at the students and their accomplishments via video, along with a musical performance featuring African dance, a percussionist and even a juggler. “The children were overjoyed with the celebration,” said Fabiola Rodriguez Ceseña, Agriculture & Community Affairs Manager. “We wanted them to see just how much they learned and how proud we are of their participation.”

In honor of the celebration, Chef Gonzalo prepared delicious dishes from the produce grown in the one-acre community garden that the students helped maintain. Included on the menu was a fresh “Ensalada de Huerto”, or garden salad, that included spinach, beets, carrots and radishes — all harvested by the children. Alongside the salad, Chef prepared a traditional Spanish tortilla with swisschard and suckling pig tacos.

At Costa Palmas we strive to make a positive impact on the children of the local community. Fabiola and Cacho do an amazing job executing this program. Their genuine passion for what they do was evident at the celebration, thanks to the many comments of appreciation made by the students, parents, teachers and members of the community. Gracias!
